Grand Rapids approach

Detroit and southeast Michigan
The long northwest crossing reaches Traverse City through central or northern Lower Peninsula corridors. Treat it as the travel day rather than attaching a peninsula tasting route or Sleeping Bear excursion to arrival.
Petoskey and Mackinac direction
US-31 connects the northern Lake Michigan shore. Resort-town traffic and stops along the water can make elapsed time less predictable than mileage alone.
Parking downtown

Local buses and car-free limits
Bay Area Transportation Authority buses serve the region, but a short downtown stay is much easier without a car than a weekend built around wineries, East Bay hotels, or Sleeping Bear Dunes. The route map should be matched to the hotel and each intended stop.
